Thinking about buying a new drone? From the beginning of next year, you can only use only a class C drone in the open category

The busiest drone flying season is just starting, and many people may be thinking about buying a new drone. Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom wants to remind you that starting at the beginning of 2024, you can only use a class C (C0-C6) drone in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2019/945 in the open category. This is worth keeping in mind if you plan on purchasing a new drone.

You will still be able to use existing drones, albeit with the following restrictions:

  • Drones weighing less than 250 g and traveling at a maximum speed of 19 m/s may be operated in accordance with the terms of sub-category ‘open A1’ even if they do not bear the class C0 marking. The remote pilot must familiarise themself with the manual of the device, but passing the online examination is not compulsory, albeit recommended.
  • Drones weighing less than 25 kg may be operated in accordance with the terms of sub-category ‘open A3’ even if they do not bear the class C2–C6 marking. The remote pilot must pass the online examination.
